SS17 Beauty trend editorial

To follow on from my SS17 beauty report I wanted to do a beauty editorial to showcase my makeup skills. As I wanted these images to be high quality and professional I had to find a good photographer to take these photo's, I was suggested by a photographer I used for my Reclaimed Vintage styling shoot to use a girl on her course called Danni Gibbs. Despite having her FMP due around the same time as mine and another deadline the day after I planned the shoot for Danni was very willing to help and agreed to photograph for me, despite me warning her that it could take up to six hours. As a model I used Chloe Hammond, the model I used for the Reclaimed Vintage shoot as she had all the facial features that met the brief for a beauty shoot. The only problem I faced when organising was trying to book a studio as they are very full up on bookings at this time of year and trying to find a slot that the model, photographer and I could all attend was tricky. As well as all deciding on a day and time, whenever I went to try and book a slot the girl who does the bookings wasn't available so I had to keep going away and returning to try and catch her. This was very frustrating as it meant constantly going back and forth not knowing whether the time I needed was available or not. The next step was deciding what looks to do more my editorial. I looked through my beauty trend report as I thought it would make sense to design looks inspired to the trends I spoke about in my article. I wanted to make sure they were colourful, high fashion but not over the top like for my festival beauty shoot. I wanted to have a focus point in every image. After going through my article and looking at backstage images from the SS17 fashion weeks I decided on 5 looks as this was realistic in the time slot I had booked:

  • A bold lip, flawless skin, long eyelashes and groomed brows. Taking inspiration from the Mary Katrantzou show. I think a berry cerise would suit my models fair skin and dark hair.

  • A dramatic, sharp winged eyeliner in a bold, bright pink. Paired back with a flawless base, groomed brows and long eyelashes.

  • I wanted to combine the glossy lid trend with the striking pop of colour on the eyelids. I am moving towards glossy yellow eyes in a bright lemon shade. I might pair this with a postbox red lip to really make a statement as I think the red and yellow would compliment each other really well.

  • I feel like I can't ignore the blue eye trend but want to tailor this look for a night out. I want to do a dramatic metallic midnight blue smokey eye with sun-kissed skin. I am going to coat the lips in a peach toned nude as I think this will really set off the bronzed skin and make the blue pop at the same time.

  • For a more creative look I want to try out the ear makeup trend. I think this would look really beautiful with a flawless base and a heavy gold toned highlighter. I want to extend the makeup from the ear down the jawline and then tie it together with a matching graphic eyeliner. I am thinking of using red as this will suit my models skin tone and look really effective against the highlighter.

Hair inspiration:

The hair won't be very visible in the images as they will be close up beauty shots but I want to keep it sleek and off the face. I think a smoothed back low ponytail will do the job perfectly. As the makeup will take quite a while to keep changing this hairstyle is a low maintenance and simple style that will take a small amount of time. My model has long, straight, fine hair which will suit this hairstyle well.

Lighting, backdrop and image inspiration:

I want a fresh nude coloured back drop as this will make the makeup stand out, while still keeping its Spring/Summer aesthetic. I didn't want to use a white background as I thought this might look tacky and I didn't want to use a black background as I thought this would look more like an Autumn/Winter shoot. I wanted the lighting to be bright and clean with minimal shadows as I want the makeup to be the sole focus.

Pose mood board:

To make this editorial as interesting as possible I want to make the images for each makeup look really different to each other. I think this will be necessary as well because different angles will be required to show off different focus points of each makeup look. Below is a mood board I made to show off different angles and poses I am interested in experimenting with at the photo shoot.
